“Where we belong is often where we least expect to find ourselves—a place that we may have willed ourselves to forget, but that the heart remembers forever.”
― Emily Giffin, Where We Belong
Emily Giffin is by far one of my favorite authors. She is my go to, when I need a book that will captivate me. Her stories are light reads, full of drama and romance, laughter and tears. She has also written Something Borrowed, Something Blue, Love the One You Are With and most recently, Where We Belong.
Where We Belong’s Summary:
Marian Caldwell is a thirty-six year old television producer, living her dream in New York City. With a fulfilling career and satisfying relationship, she has convinced everyone, including herself, that her life is just as she wants it to be. But one night, Marian answers a knock on the door . . . only to find Kirby Rose, an eighteen-year-old girl with a key to a past that Marian thought she had sealed off forever. From the moment Kirby appears on her doorstep, Marian’s perfectly constructed world—and her very identity—will be shaken to its core, resurrecting ghosts and memories of a passionate young love affair that threaten everything that has come to define her.
Favorite Quotes and Meanings:
“Even if we no longer have much in common, we would have always had the past, which, in some ways, is just as important as the present or future. It is where we come from, what makes us who we are.”
― Emily Giffin, Where We Belong
This book is all about a girls quest of finding where she belongs, which is something most of us can relate to. I think we all have a period of time where we question, who we are. Asking ourselves if our past defines who we are and if we can move forward and create who we want to be?
“Whats not to love is hardly a reason to love. And the catch of your life is not the same thing as the love of your life. Be careful of that subtle but rather crucial distinction.”
― Emily Giffin, Where We Belong
This book also reminded me the misfortune of settling. Just because you want something like it and its there, doesn’t mean it is right. Wait for that little butterfly feeling that takes over every time you hear their name. Wait until you don’t have to talk yourself into loving someone but when you have to talk yourself out of being to scared to love them.
“I know what they say about secrets. I’ve heard it all. That they can haunt and govern you. That they can poison relationships and divide families. That in the end, only the truth will set you free.”
― Emily Giffin, Where We Belong
Finally, to never, ever keep a secret. Even if the other person never finds out, it will destroy you from the inside out. Tell the truth and own your life. Have the courage to do what is right and in the end, it will all come out the way it was suppose to .
Great light read for your airplane rides to visit family over the holidays! Check it out!
